The cruiser Long Beach is the world’s rst nuclear pow ered surface vessel.
Capable of cruising for 360,000 miles at 20 knots without touching base, she
parts the sea with a rakish bow reminiscent of the old clippers. The substitution
of nuclear pow er for combustible fuels eliminated the need for smokestacks .
Their absence contributes to the ship’s distinctive appearance. Indeed, her hull
looks more like a yacht than a warship, yet she is armed almost exclusively with
guided missiles – Terriers forw ard, Regulus amidship and a Talos battery aft .
MISSILE SYSTEMS
The ramjet propelled Talos is capable of engaging both supersonic and subsonic
targets , including other missiles. Its complex handling and launching system
weighs 350 tons . The system automatically selects the type of missile the re
control ocer chooses and delivers it to the launching station . The control sys-
tem is so complex that the equipment must not only remember which missile is
in which rack but also any changes made in the racks themselves. The ship
includes provison for an eight missile Polaris launching system as well. She also
has tw o guns for use against surface targets and slower aircraft. USS Long Beach
stands ready to meet any military threat on sea, undersea or in the air a fore-
runner in America ’s new nuclear navy.
