The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences traces its roots to one of the country's oldest
crime laboratory systems. Originally formed during the Great Depression in 1935, the agency was
part of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and was tasked with cooperating with coroners to
determine the cause of death in cases involving foul play and to provide scientific assistance to all
law enforcement agencies in the state. Today, the agency still uses leading-edge science to solve
crimes, but it is now a separate state agency with its own funding based in Auburn, Ala.
Making sure that only authorized individuals access the highly confidential criminal cases stored
on the Department's computer system is a high priority for the agency. In November of 2004, the
agency implemented an in-house identification card program to provide secure access to the
computer system.
Using a Zebra P310i printer, the agency creates barcode-encoded cards in-house and on
demand for its 200 employees. The cards are then used to access the computer system.
"Employees scan themselves into the computers with their cards," said Verlencia Williams,
information technology specialist for the Department of Forensic Sciences. "That brings up the
software that lets them start working on the computer. This way we know who has accessed a
particular case and what they have done with it."
Employees also wear the photo ID cards as badges at all times in department offices. With offices
all over the state of Alabama, the cards are a quick way to identify employees who travel to other
offices.
"That way, if you walk in the door, they know you're an employee and you don't have to prove
who you are," Williams emphasizes.
