Getting Started
How to Measure Breath Odor
Before use
The batteries are already installed.
To activate the unit, simply remove
the strip on the positive polarity.
Taking Readings
1. Wave the unit gently in the air
4–5 times. This will remove any
odors or moisture left in the
product.
2.Turn the unit on by pushing
the power button. It will beep
in response.
3. The Odor Symbol will appear and
count down from 3–1. When the
word “Start” is displayed, breathe
into the sensor for three seconds.
Position your thumb on the front
of the unit to help direct the
sensor to your mouth. Do not
cover the sensor or back vent
with your hand.
Note: Touch your thumb to your
chin so that the sensor is right
in front of your mouth. The
opening should be about 1/2"
(1 cm) away from your mouth.
4. For best results, breathe into the
sensor as if you are yawning.
Try to breathe out the same
amount of air at the same speed
each time you test your breath.
5. When the test is complete, the
unit will beep. Your breath odor
level will appear on the display
and flash for several seconds.
Then the unit will turn off.
Note: The power will turn off auto-
matically if you don’t breathe into
the sensor within five seconds
after the display indicates you
should start measuring.
For the Most Accurate Readings
Readings should not be taken during or immediately after
using mints or breathspray, eating or drinking. Wait at least
ten minutes before using BreathAlert.
Rinse your mouth thoroughly after cleaning your teeth or using
mouthwash. Wait at least ten minutes before using BreathAlert.
BreathAlert is sensitive to certain environmental factors that
can interfere with the units ability to detect breath odor level
correctly. For best results, avoid:
– Hot and humid places
– Windy areas
– Air polluted areas
Note: Usage in such environments may damage the product.
If you don’t use BreathAlert for an extended period of time, test
your breath odor level several times to re-activate the product.

Introduction
Thank you for purchasing BreathAlert. Read
these instructions before using your new
product and keep them for future reference.
What Causes Breath Odor?
The vast majority of bad breath is caused by the presence of one or
more of the following: bacteria; decreased saliva; oral decay or
disease; stress; food, alcohol or medication consumed; and the
lack of basic oral hygiene. In a few cases, bad breath can be caused
by respiratory infection, allergies or diseases such as diabetes and
emphysema. Most bad breath is temporary and will improve over
time. However chronic halitosis sufferers may require professional
treatment to manage their problem.
BreathAlert detects and measures the volatile sulfide compounds and
hydrocarbon gas that are present when breath is bad. Depending on
the amount measured, the unit displays the degree of odor in four
levels (see Breath Odor Level diagram).
Note: There are some odors that contain a type of gas that cannot
be detected by BreathAlert.
What to Do If BreathAlert Detects
Breath Odor
80–90% of the time, breath odor can be easily corrected by
improving the condition inside of your mouth.
Brush and/or floss your teeth to remove any food remains.
If the surface of your tongue is white, this indicates there are
food remains on your tongue. Brush your tongue 2–3 times
with a tooth brush.
If you’re unable to brush your teeth, use a mouth spray or
chew gum.
Drink plenty of water.
