Infra-red Remote Temperature Sensors
Overview
The IR100 & IR120 sensors oer a non-contact means
of measuring the surface temperature of an object by
sensing the infra-red radiation given o. They can be
used in the measurement of leaf, canopy and average
surface temperature.
Simple to install, the IR100 & IR120 do not inuence
the target temperature and are an eective means of
getting a spatial average temperature. The sensors
work with Campbell Scientic’s CR800, CR1000 or
CR3000 or any logger able to oer reverse excitation.
A built in amplier oers good noise immunity. The
IR100 has an ultra-narrow eld of view (4-5° half-
angle) with a reduced output signal (5 mV per °C).
The IR120 has a wider eld of view (20° half-angle)
with a larger output signal (20 mV per °C).
Both variants of these sensors limit sensitivity to the
long wave, infra-red spectrum as required for infra-
red thermometry. The IR120 has an additional lter
to block radiation below 7 µm so is better suited to
applications where solar radiation may be reected
into the sensor.
The sensors contain a thermopile detector which
detects the presence of thermal radiation. The
thermopile detector consists of a number of
thermocouples connected in series, one set being
exposed to the source of radiation, whilst the
other is shielded from it. A highly polished metal
cone concentrates the radiation onto the exposed
junctions, which are coated with lamp-black to
enhance the eciency with which the radiation is
absorbed. The thermopile detector outputs a voltage
proportional to the thermal energy balance between
itself and the surface it is detecting.
A separate calibrated thermistor, embedded in
the sensor body directly behind the thermopile
measures the reference body temperature. Both
results are combined and processed in the logger to
output the measured surface temperature.
For outside use, the sensors can be mounted within
a simple solar shield to reduce errors caused by rapid
temperature changes.
